Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
Fun at the DS LAN

Rebound once again rallied the faithful DS troops and we met this past Friday to indulge in a little friendly competition.

As usual it was no holds barred and amidst the red shells and bullet bills, it became apparent that people’s definitions of the word ‘friendly’ varied. For some (ok, I admit, it was just me) Mario Kart Wii had confused the matter at hand, and the top DS screen was flipped forward by mistake as I shook my DS while jumping over an obstacle to get that extra boost. Cough…noob.

Want to fight? Fight me!

After many not so polite threats and exclamations we wrapped up our eight race Mario Kart DS competition and jumped into some much needed refreshments. Next up was Metroid Prime Pinball and it was a pretty close fought battle between the competitors, although I always seem to spend more time trying to avoid those damn enemies than actually trying to score combos and the like. With this game the first person to score 100 000 wins so it is a race to flip and twiddle to victory.

Of course a DS LAN would just not be complete without a little Bomberman and Tetris. We discovered that first timer Oliver was actually quite familiar with Bomberman and many of us learned a few tricks from watching him from the sidelines after we had been blown to smithereens by cleverly placed bombs. Tetris, ah Tetris, some days you just have the touch…and others you are on the receiving end of piles of blocks dropped cruelly one after another.

We also had a sneak peak at the upcoming Tetris movie but don’t tell my friend Brad about it please because he will probably make us watch it at one of his dodgy DVD evenings. And by dodgy I don’t mean what you are thinking, I mean ‘Death Race 2000’ and ‘Santa Conquers the Martians’ dodgy…worst movies of all time kind of dodgy.

The next Tetris game will be mine...MINE!

Speaking of ‘Death Race 2000’ (and I know I digress) but have you heard there is a remake on the way? For the majority of the population who has never had the misfortune of seeing this movie (because you probably don’t have a friend named Brad who makes you watch ‘Flash Gordon’), let me explain the simple premise – the deathrace is the sporting event of the future where you earn points for running over pedestrians in a cross-country car race.

The movie was released in 1975 and is set in the year 2000. Sadly for Rambo’s reputation, it stars Sylvester Stallone and ends with what I think is the worst (and funniest) pun of all time…in case you have been maniacally inspired to watch the movie now I won’t spoil it for you but will just say that it involves a hand grenade. Starring Jason Statham, Death Race 3000 is a kind of sequel that tells the tale of a kill-or-be-killed car race where inmates in a prison can win their freedom after winning the race 5 times. If it sounds good look out for it on DVD because I don’t think this will make it to the big screen.

Girls rule!

So, back to the DS LAN, Oliver finally gave us the chance to play Planet Puzzle League. Very cool game and we hope to see it at the next get together! All in all another great evening with cool friends, good food and most importantly awesome games! Congratulations to our winners who each won themselves a Nintendo Wii cap and lanyard. Your prizes are winging their way to Durbs as I type so stay tuned! Thanks again to Core Gaming for hooking us up.

I warned you not to insult my DS Phat again!

It sucks that I missed this one.. unfortunately for me Friday nights are just too busy for me now. I have a commitment which takes pretty much every Friday night for me... but hopefully I'll be able to make one some time soon.
